Is there a limit to how many people can join a group hike?

Yes. To comply with DEC rules for Wilderness Areas, the maximum group size is 12 people (including hikers and leaders). The minimum group size for an official hike is 3 people.

On some trailless peaks during the spring fledgling season (June 1–July 15), group size is limited to 8 hikers to protect ground-nesting birds like the Bicknell’s Thrush. This pertains to:

  • Friday, Balsam Cap, Lone, Rocky, and between Rocky and Table
  • Any bushwhacks from any of the above to Wittenberg or Cornell
  • Rusk, North Dome, and Sherrill

Additionally, the number of scheduled hikes to each of those peaks should be limited to three during the same time.

What clothing should I wear?

Avoid cotton in cool or cold weather because it retains moisture and can cause hypothermia. Wear wool, fleece, silk, or wicking synthetic materials (like polypropylene) for base layers. Always carry a headlamp, hat, and gloves in your pack.

What gear is required for winter or early spring hikes?

Each hiker must bring snowshoes and traction aids (such as full crampons) to the trailhead. The leader will determine if they must be carried during the hike. Do not rely on bare ground at the parking lot as an indicator of trail conditions.

Can a hike leader turn me away?

Yes. Leaders have absolute discretion to refuse participation to anyone not properly equipped, conditioned, or prepared.

What are the rules regarding pacing and staying with the group?

Participants must stay with the group and not race ahead. The Club follows the hikeSafe code: pace to the slowest person, start together, and end together.

What is the Club's general hiking credo?

The Club promotes three principles: (1) Follow the Rules, (2) Use your Map & Compass, and (3) Know your Limitations. Hikers should also practice the seven Leave No Trace principles.

Will hikes be canceled for bad weather?

Yes. Leaders may cancel hikes due to dangerous weather, heavy precipitation, or hazardous driving conditions. Contact the leader if unsure about weather conditions.
